i was a horse racing trader for 5 years and saw lots of shit, the whipping thing is like you said, not so bad. i saw the footage of Davy punching the horse and it was fucking shocking! He should have got a much harsher ban for that! It was so obviously him taking out his frustration on the horse.
It is crazy. Doing some research on the matter I unearthed that it only happened three times in the past 25 years, one instance including a jockey “HEAD BUTTING” a horse. Forget the actual act itself, think of the message it sends out about horse racing in general, which already has its fair share of NAY sayers (excuse the pun)
What do you think the punishment should have been?
